Espelho area guide

Praia do Espelho, between Trancoso and Caraíva: its communities, from Jacumã to Satu, tides and natural pools, how to get there and what to know before buying.

Draft for review by Nathan and Edmond. Map pins show the approximate centre of each area.

Praia do Espelho is often named one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Between Trancoso and Caraíva, coloured cliffs, coconut palms and reefs that form natural pools at low tide frame a coast with very few buildings. This guide covers its communities, how to get there and what to know before buying.

Practical information

Getting there

Espelho is roughly 22–27 km south of Trancoso, about 40–50 minutes by car: a short paved stretch, then a dirt road that an ordinary car can manage but which can be rough after rain. From Porto Seguro airport, allow about 1.5 hours.

Visitors park on the clifftop and walk down to the beach. In high season, beach restaurants often ask for a minimum spend.

Tides

Go at low tide, ideally around 0.0–0.5 m, when the natural pools form. The lowest tides come with the new and full moon.

The coastal walk south to Caraíva, about 10 km past Juacema, Satu and the cliffs, takes about two and a half hours.

Recognition

The Guardian ranked Espelho the sixth most beautiful beach in Brazil in 2025, and it has featured in Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice rankings for South America.

When to go

August and September are the driest months; November is usually the wettest. December to March is the busiest period.

Buying in Espelho

Espelho lies within the APA Caraíva/Trancoso, a state environmental protection area. Its zoning protects the cliffs and coastal slopes, where building is very limited, and sets larger minimum plots and lower building limits than in most of Trancoso. Outeiro das Brisas also has its own condominium rules. We check the zoning and title of every plot before you buy.

Espelho: frequently asked questions

Why is it called Espelho?

Espelho means mirror. At low tide the reef holds still, shallow pools that reflect the sky and the palm trees. The beach’s original name is Curuípe.

When is the best time to see the natural pools?

At low tide, ideally when the tide is between 0.0 and 0.5 metres. Check the tide table before you go; the new and full moon bring the lowest tides.

How far is Espelho from Trancoso?

About 22–27 km, or 40–50 minutes by car, the last part on a dirt road.

Can I build on a plot at Espelho?

Yes, within the rules of the environmental protection area and, inside Outeiro das Brisas, the condominium rules. These set minimum plot sizes, how much can be built and how high, and protect the cliffs. We check what each plot allows before you make an offer.
