Top 5 Things Global Buyers Don’t Expect (But Love) About Trancoso, Brazil

Trancoso on Brazil’s Bahian coast is a picturesque unspoiled coastal village, compared to other far flung tropical destinations, it can see a little rough and ready, but this is all part of its authentic charm. Trancoso first appeared on the radar of travellers in the 1970s, when it became popular amongst hippies looking for a more bohemian way of life.

Today, it still has a bohemian vibe, and appeals to a much wider audience of travellers, holiday makers, expats and property investors.  International buyers looking for beachside homes for sale in Brazil, where they can enjoy the area’s tropical laid-back lifestyle, cultural richness and natural beauty, account for much of the interest in luxury Trancoso real estate.

1.Bohemian Charm

Supermodels and celebrities including Naomi Campbell and Beyonce have access to the world’s most glamorous locations and properties, but more and more the world’s wealthiest individuals are choosing to experience the understated bohemian charm of Trancoso instead.

Imagine a place where electricity only arrived in the late 1980s…this once old fishing village is home to around 10,000 people, with a strong culture and traditions, created by a fusion of indigenous Pataxo, African and Portuguese traditions. The atmosphere is a magical blend of simplicity, rustic style, pulsing rhythms and the barefoot freedom of its beautiful beaches.

2. The ‘Quadrado’ – the heart of Trancoso

It is almost as if Trancoso has remained frozen in time, when the beating heart of a community was the village square. Trancoso’s famous Quadrado is protected as national heritage and is the village’s historical centre, lined with traditional colourful fishermen’s homes, restaurants, and the 16th Century church of São João Batista (one of the oldest in Brazil) and even a football pitch.

It is a place where the entire community, from children to grandparents, visitors and locals, all congregate to chat, shop, enjoy a meal, listen to music, play a game of football or simply take a stroll. It is here at the Quadrado where the village hosts traditional religious festivals and it also offers a superb vantage point to take in the views across some of Trancoso’s famous white sandy beaches.

3. Coral reefs and tidal pools

One of Trancoso’s most spectacular and surprising natural wonders is the vibrant coral reefs, particularly at Itapororoca or Praia dos Coqueiros. It is an incredible thought, that when you invest in Trancoso real estate, you are buying a property within a stone’s throw of some of the world’s most beautiful natural marine formations.  Trancoso’s beaches are a magnet for scuba divers and snorkelers, with its clear azure blue waters, coral reefs and marine biodiversity.

One of the most well-known beaches, Mirror Beach, (Praia do Espelho), is so called, because of the inky-blue natural pools that are formed at low tide, which when caught by the moonlight appear to create a giant silver shimmering mirror.

4. Trancos, Bahian Cuisine and Culture

International buyers and visitors are often blown away by the colour and rich flavours of the local cuisine, which is a heady mix of European and African cookery. Dishes use a combination of indigenous, European, African and American ingredients. Portuguese ships brought fish, meat, olive oil and sugar cane, which  resulted in the delicious flavoursome dishes that we associate with Bahian cuisine today. Here are some of our favourite traditional dishes:

  • Acarajé (African fritters): A traditional African street-food snack, the fritters are made with bean and onions and fried in palm oil which gives it the typical flavour and orange colour. Once cooked they are halved and stuffed with a delicious filling, which could be meat, fish, chicken or prawns accompanied by coconut milk, peppers and peanuts.
  • Feijoada (Black bean stew): A slow cooked casserole with black beans and smoked and / or salted meat. It is traditionally served with rice, oranges, toasted cassava flour and a spicy sauce.
  • Moqueca (Traditional fish stew): Considered to be the most traditional and important Bahian dish, this tasty fish stew is cooked in a clay pan using peppers, tomatoes, onions, palm oil and the unmistakable flavour of fresh coriander leaves.
  • Vatapá (Seafood stew): The heavenly mix of seafood, sweet coconut sauce and coriander come together to create a creamy sauce that is often served as an accompaniment to Acarajé.

5. Beaches to rival the Caribbean

The Caribbean islands and their world-famous resorts are renowned for their dreamy clear calm water and white powdery sands, making them a must-do destination for international travellers.  And until you visit Trancoso, you may not believe these beaches can be bettered. As soon as you step foot on the Bahian coast, you will see exactly what the rest of the world has been missing, it not only has rich marine life, coral reefs but it also has some of the world’s most stunning beaches.

Framed against pink cliffs and palm trees, some beaches are secluded where you lose yourself in your own world without another soul insight, others like Praia dos Nativos have beach bars and restaurants and beautiful tidal pools when the tide goes out.  What they all have in common is the crystal-clear water and fine sand, that is more than a match for the Caribbean when it comes to natural beauty.

In conclusion, Trancoso is the perfect combination of natural beauty and laid-back authenticity with a cultural richness that is lacking in much of the world’s beachside hotspots. Offering much more than the opportunity to own your own property in Brazil, you also get to experience the wonderful, rich patina of life and the culture heritage of this wonderful corner of the world.
