Trancoso: The emerging gem rivalling traditional jet-set destinations

When we think of the playgrounds of the rich and famous, it is usually a sunny Caribbean island, such as St. Barts or Barbados or the decidedly upmarket enclave of The Hamptons. Yet over the last few years, Trancoso, Bahia, Brazil has been quietly growing a following amongst the jet-set, who recognise this charming town as being one of the very few unspoilt, authentic, all-year-round sunshine destinations. It’s relative inaccessibility, is an added attraction, ensuring that it will never over-developed and overcrowded, thereby retaining its exclusive aura.
Hugging the coastline in the state of Bahia in the north-east of Brazil, Trancoso is charming village that offers a unique blend of authenticity, natural beauty and exclusivity. It is this heady mix that appeals to international jet-setters who are always on the lookout for the next big thing in luxury travel.
On paper, Trancoso and the state of Bahía may seem like a surprising and unassuming destination, yet for those who have already discovered Bahía’s blissful coastline, the questions is more likely to be. “What took you so long?”
Colonial past
In some ways it is difficult to compare, each destination has a distinctive flavour due to their respective colonial past: St Barts, or to use its official name, Saint Barthélemy, is a French overseas territory, together with a number of small surrounding islands. French is widely spoken and it has a laid-back luxury vibe with a hint of French elegance, which appeals to the rich and famous and yachters alike.
On the other hand, Trancoso owes much of its character to the Portuguese settlers who arrived in 1586, and Portuguese is the main language spoken. There is mix of European and African, brought by the settles and African slaves and the indigenous communities. Today the town’s character has a unique Afro-Brazilian personality and culture.
Beautiful beaches
As a Caribbean island St Barts is blessed with beautiful beaches, with powder white sand and crystal-clear water, making it the perfect playground for those who enjoy water sports, swimming and sunbathing. Whereas, Trancoso, Bahía is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with numerous rivers and a large bay, from where the state takes it name. However, the waters are often compared to the Caribbean Sea, due to the superb beaches, clarity of the water, coral and the lush tropical vegetation fringing the beaches.
Although Trancoso covers only a tiny part of Brazil’s 7,491 kms of coastline, there is an incredible choice of beaches, each offering a unique slice of holiday heaven. In our opinion, as regular visitors and the proud owners of luxury Trancoso, real estate, the three best beaches in Trancoso are: Praia do Espelho, Praia dos Nativos and Itapororoca, find out more in our blog, “Beaches of Bahía, Trancoso, Brazil”.
Historic charm
Steeped in history, Trancoso retains its colonial charm, adorned with pretty colourful houses and fishermen’s cottage, on cobbled streets and an olde world square– the Quadrado – dating back to the 16th Century. This the beating heart of the town, where people come together to sit, talk, eat and play. There are stalls, shops, restaurants, bars and even games of football, against the backdrop of the stunning sandy beaches. Overlooking the Quadrado, you’ll find Sao Batista Church, one of the oldest in Brazil (built in the 16th Century). The African inspired culture, is loud, vibrant, relaxed and completely mesmerising.
St Barts offers a completely different experience where high-end visitors can enjoy a more sophisticated holiday, where it is possible to enjoy peace and privacy. That said, as touched upon early, Trancoso’s relative anonymity amongst regular holiday makers, also appeals to those who crave privacy and a place where they can let their hair down, away from prying eyes, whilst indulging in some serious relaxation.
